Update (Sept. 22, 2017):
The University of Michigan student sexual misconduct policy currently in place is consistent with the interim guidance issued today by the U.S. Department of Education. No immediate changes are necessary.

Dear Students:

A safe environment for all is our No. 1 priority, and we want to assure all U-M students that our approach to addressing student sexual misconduct has not changed. Although the U.S. Department of Education has announced it is reviewing guidance on campus sexual misconduct and Title IX, no new federal guidelines have been issued.

We continue our longstanding commitment to sexual misconduct education and prevention outlined in the policy officially known as the Policy & Procedures on Student Sexual & Gender-Based Misconduct & Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence.

These tools, along with students working together to end sexual misconduct, are the most effective measures we have to keep our community safe. The many programs and support services offered by our Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC) will remain in place for our students, as well. Part of our work includes fostering conversations about consent, how to have healthy relationships, bystander intervention and making the university a more inclusive environment.

U-M implemented its current policy in 2016, following a thorough and transparent examination of the problem of sexual misconduct on our campus and discussions with faculty and staff experts and students. The policy aligns with our values and is based on best practices and rigorous research.

We will continue to watch closely for and carefully consider any changes in Department of Education policy or guidance. In the meantime, please know that our existing policy remains in effect, and that professional services, educational programs and outreach initiatives are available to all students on our campus through SAPAC, our Dean of Students Office and other Student Life units (resources available at https://studentlife.umich.edu/get-help). And our commitment to a safe and supportive campus environment for all students, reflective of our community’s shared values, continues undiminished.
